Getting started on your Generator Maintenance Plan

An automatic backup power generator keeps the power flowing to the critical systems in your home. That’s why it’s important to ensure your generator is ready to operate when you need it most. HomeWiz offers preventive maintenance and full service protection plans to help keep your generator up and running.

Generators require routine maintenance, similar to an oil change on your car. HomeWiz offers a Backup Power Generator Preventive Maintenance Plan that provides an annual inspection of the generator to help ensure smooth operation.

  • Change engine oil and replace oil filter, and air filter.
  • Visually inspect unit, record and verify the unit is functioning properly.
  • Check the coolant (If applicable) and lubrication systems.
  • Inspect the air filter and exhaust system.
  • Inspect all hoses and belts on the unit.
  • Inspect the governor, voltage regulator and ignition components.
  • Perform a functional test of the generators control systems.
  • Inspect the block heater if applicable.
  • Test and record the battery condition
  • Test and record the battery charging system.
  • Clean around generator area after service

Generators are a smart option in you live in an area with a higher risk of power outages, or areas that have more trees that can topple on top of power lines. It’s a huge inconvenience to lose power in situations like these—you can run the risk of freezing your pipes or having to pay for a hotel to live comfortably.

There are two main types of generators: standby and portable. A standby generator will kick on as soon as you lose electricity and can power most of your home’s appliances. A whole house generator, as you could guess, powers your entire house, while a selective circuit generator can maintain power for 8-12 circuits of your choosing. Portable generators, on the other hand, are less expensive but can only handle a few appliances. They need to be connected to your electrical panel via a transfer switch.

At HomeWiz, we’re experts when it comes to all types of generators. We can provide every facet of generator repair service—from installation of transfer switches for portable generators to repair and maintenance for larger standby units. Like cars, generators need to be serviced regularly to work efficiently.
