In the middle of a scorching summer day, there’s nothing worse than turning on your AC system only to find that it blows warm air back at you.
An HVAC system is like a car – it needs proper maintenance and checkups to ensure that it runs smoothly. Without regular maintenance, it can quickly fall into disrepair. As a homeowner, it’s important to schedule annual maintenance appointments with a certified technician to proactively avoid an issue. Our AC service club membership includes a free annual inspection, where a licensed electrician will check your entire home for issues.
Let’s delve into what could cause an AC to blow warm air.
- Clogged or dirty air filters. HVAC filters trap airborne materials like dust, pollen and bacteria to prevent them from circulating throughout your home. Because of that, it’s important to replace the filters every couple of months. If you don’t, HVAC systems will need to work harder to make up for it and will decrease in performance, or even stop working.
- Electrical issues. Electrical problems, such as a malfunctioning thermostat, sensor or breaker, can cause an HVAC system to stop working. In these cases, it’s especially important to call a licensed electrician to diagnose and troubleshoot the issue to avoid a dangerous or even life-threatening situation.
- Refrigerant leak. AC systems rely on refrigerant to blow cold air. Without it, an AC system can’t remove heat from the surrounding air. Refrigerant isn’t like a gas tank that dwindles over time, so if the levels are low, there’s most likely a leak. An HVAC technician can discover and repair the leak to get your AC system back up and running.
- Old AC system. Unfortunately, an AC system doesn’t run forever. Regular maintenance checks can help increase the longevity of an air conditioner, but even with maintenance, an AC system only lasts about 10-15 years. Once an AC system starts to break down, it’s best to replace it with a new unit to avoid future issues.
